I’m not sure if you know this about me, but I kinda like dancing to music. Ok I don’t kinda like it, I’m kinda obsessed with it. Ok I’m not kinda obsessed, I am wildly-fiercely-majorly obsessed with it. My favorite way to dance to music is when it’s live and I’m with all of you at a festival or a show. Those moments are my soul medicine and I seek out to experience as much of them as possible. It would be amazing if I could dance with you live and in person everyday. It happens in my dreams, but in my reality I find myself rocking out in my house all by myself and even though it’s fun, it can be kinda lonely. When Facebook launched it’s LIVE feature I thought, “Yay! This is a way I can dance with people “in person” each week.”
Every Tuesday at 11ish am I invite people from all over the world to dance with me at the Work Day Mini-Festival. Each week I pick a different theme for the headliners like love, the sun, my NOLA JazzFest favs, bands playing in my hometown of Burlington, VT, sweet covers and more. Thousands of people have danced with me to Ryan Montbleau, the Grateful Dead, Phish, Imagine Dragons, The Black Keys, the Beastie Boys, Rusted Root, Ceelo Green, Janis Joplin, Mike Love, Zach Deputy, the Doors, the Rolling Stones, Marco Benevento, Madonna, Karl Denson, Twisted Sister, Johnnyswim, Madaila and more.
These Mini-Fests are so fun because they are interactive. People can leave comments and I can talk directly to everyone in the moment. Check out last week’s festival HERE and click on the live subscribe button to get notifications when I go live. Last week while dancing with hundreds of people to Hit Em’ Up Style by the Carolina Chocolate Drops I said the words, “Let’s change the world by shaking our sweet asses right now!”
Did you know that shaking your sweet ass IS a way to change the world? When you take as little time as one minute to do something you love every day (which for me is anything music related) you actually change the level at which you are vibrating. When you do that you start to feel really good and it’s contagious. Just by twerking a little you are a catalyst of change. When you are in a good mood you are generally nicer to people. Just think about all the people you come in contact with in a day. Your children, your partner, the bank teller, the person you smile at who is in the car next to you, the cashier at the grocery store etc. Your smile or authentic kind interaction makes a difference in their lives and everyone they come in contact with too. So by shaking your sweet as you ARE creating a snowball effect of awesome which changes the world for the better.
Sometimes I’m in such a pissy mood or so tired that I don’t want to shake my sweet ass even for one minute. On those days I force myself to do it. At first I put on my best pouty face and barely move, but once the beat picks up I can’t resist it and I start to let my juicy booty jiggle all over the place. The dance and good feelings were in there, I just had to trick them into coming out.
Dance is just one of the things I do for myself when it comes to self-care and as you can see it’s not a selfish act. It’s selfish to not take the time to dance or get a massage or take a bubble bath or go for a walk or write in my journal or get crafty or read a book or watch a cheesy movie because I’m not as nice to people when I don’t do those things. I also don’t feel as motivated to do whatever it is that I’m up to that uses my unique gifts to serve the world.
Your dance matters!!! I challenge each and every one of you to dance for one minute today. Maybe you plug some headphones into your phone and have a little rager in the bathroom at work. Maybe you put on your favorite booty shaking song and dance with your kiddos. Maybe you go for a dance walk in nature. Maybe you go to your car during your lunch break, turn up the tunes and rock out in the backseat.
When you are done dancing, come back here and report how you feel by leaving a comment below and challenge a friend of yours to dance too by tagging them.
Your dance matters. Shake your sweet ass and change the world!!!
The awesome in me sees and bows to the awesome in you,
