I love this quote by Heraclitus. “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
I posted this status update. It caused a lot of discussion.
I see a lot of people complaining about the Bonnaroo line-up. They have evolved and expanded just like we humans do. Sometimes we grow together and sometimes we grow apart. It’s not a bad thing. If you’re not into it think of all the possibilities you now have with your time and resources! Woohoo!
Some responses looked like this:
“There’s evolving, and then there’s selling out. MTV now owns Bonarroo, so there’s not going to be many positive things to say about it anymore. It’s sad how everything good in our society gets ruined by hipsters. There are so many better festivals to go to.”
“Bonnaroo “sold out” years ago when it became an MTV production. Now what MTV is doing is building a festival that caters to their audience.”
“It didn’t evolve. It devolved. The first bonnaroo was one of the best musical weekends of my life. The second was fairly awesome as well. As soon as Superfly cashed in it became something very different. No matter how much of your sunshiny spin(admirable) you put on it, it’s still crap.”
Take a moment to look at how your life evolved. I don’t know about you, but even though I’m still me and me to my core I’ve changed. I’ve changed from when I was a baby, a toddler, a tween, a teenager, in my twenties and even from yesterday and a minute ago. It’s impossible not to change and that’s a good thing. Some people have grown with me and some people have grown apart. Many people I walk the same path as and from other’s one or both of us strayed from the path. Sometimes our paths come back together, sometimes they don’t.
Bonnaroo might not be what you remembered. It might not be the way you want it to be. You might think the line-up sucks balls. You might not like the way they run things or the direction they’re going. The truth is the festival evolved and changed and it’s going to continue to evolve and change whether we like it or not.
Life changes every single moment of every single day no matter what so we might as well surrender to the flow and enjoy the ride.
The best part is you have a choice.
You get to choose where your time, energy and dollars go to. If you are not walking the same path as Bonnaroo, go to another festival that is on the same path as you.
You always have a choice. <<<Tweet if you know you have a choice
Do you find yourself complaining when people, places or things change? What’s that about? What’s underneath that? What are you afraid of? Whatever it is, it’s something within you and has nothing to do with the person, place or thing that changed.
