One crisp fall day in 5th grade, I decided that it was the day I was going to be brave enough to play with the cool girls during recess.
I gathered up all the courage I could in my underdeveloped teeny body and went for it. It was happening! I was playing with them. I was cool!
And then one of them noticed I was there. “Go play somewhere else,” she said as all the other girls nodded in agreement with their leader. As I ran away and cried, I heard them all laughing and one of them said, “She’s so annoying.”
I spent most of my life trying not to be annoying to people. I found it to be pretty impossible.
In high school I found my peeps and they loved my weird. We’d spend sleepovers singing and dancing to They Might Be Giants albums in their entirety. We’d meet for breakfast at my house before school and coined them “Loser Women Breakfast Fests” and wear leftover bagels around our necks all day. We went to concerts in NYC.
Those were times when I was so cool because I was myself. After high school I lost myself a couple of times in the quest of not being seen as annoying.
Today I know who I am and I know that I’m annoying to some. And that’s ok. Not everyone can digest Brussel sprouts without farting, but that doesn’t mean that Brussel sprouts aren’t an important food. I love them and would be sad to live in a world without em. Especially since I discovered the air fryer.
So my point is:
🌈 Be you.
❤️ It’s OK to be annoying.
⚡️Keeping shining.
⭐️Stay cool.
💕 I love you.
😻 Brussel sprouts are delicious
