Smoothies are my favorite way to consume a lot of the healthy stuff my body desires in the morning. It’s a real morning party! I kinda feel like a smoothie criminal getting in all of those nutrients in one meal. Once the cold weather starts showing up in my neck of the woods, I must switch the channel to a different smoothie game. One may call me a smoothie operator.
My stomach gets all psyched up for the show of food coming later in the day, but it’s important to start it off right by feeding yourself foods that are in alignment with the seasons. When I don’t do that and eat my normal go-to green smoothie full of tropical fruits and ice, my digestion gets all out of wack and I feel as though I stepped into the freezer for at least twelve live Tweezers as performed by the band Phish. My best guess as to what occurred is that my stomach enzymes froze to death causing a temporary belly ice-age (this is speculation).
What can you do to avoid the made up stomach enzyme ice-age? First things first. Cue up Sunshine by Zach Deputy, Steam by Phish and 75 and Sunny by Ryan Montbleau and prepare to rock out while putting together your heat inducing smoothie. Based on real life experiments conducted on myself, I’ve found that listening to music while cooking and eating makes everything taste better one hundred percent of the time every time.
3 Warming Smoothie Recipes to Rock This Winter
You Sexy Thing Hot Chocolate Smoothie (adapted from runningwithspoons.com)
Ingredients
1 1/4 cup of unsweetened non-dairy milk (almond, hemp, coconut, soy)
1 tbsp nut butter (peanut, almond, cashew)
1 tbsp maple syrup (the real stuff that comes from trees)
1/2 cup rolled oats
2 tbsp raw cocao powder
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
(Optional 1 tsp maca powder, 1 scoop grass-fed sustainably sourced collagen, 2 tbsp hemp powder)
Directions
- The evening prior, add all ingredients to the bowl of your blender and stir it up little darling until it all becomes well combined. Cover and place in fridge for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight. You don’t have to do this step, but when you do, the oats are way easier to blend and your smoothie will be creamier.
- When you’re ready to eat, blend on high until oats are fully broken down and a smooth and creamy consistency is reached.
- Scoop the entire smoothie into a small saucepan and set over medium heat and bring to a simmer. If your smoothie is too thick for your liking, add more milk or water until desired consistency is reached.
- When your smoothie is the perfect temperature, pour it into a heat-safe glass and enjoy!
