Who Are Your Village People?

You know the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child?”  It seems now-a-days we are expected to do everything on our own from raising our children to running our businesses to dealing with our struggles. In the technical age we’re in where we can do all our shopping online, upload books to our Kindles and stream movies in our homes there is little motivation to go out and create community. I remember when I was younger I would go outside and play with all of my neighbors. If I was thirsty or hungry I could go into any neighbors house and they would give me a drink or a snack. All of the parents watched out for all the neighborhood kids.

I remember one day I was walking to my friend Emily’s house with all my Cabbage Kids in my arms. I was scared of dogs and all of a sudden one started chasing me down the street.  I freaked out and started running full speed with all my dolls in my arms screaming at the top of my lungs . One of my neighbors was driving by and saw me running, opened the car door and I jumped in.  They drove me to Emily’s house and stopped by my parent’s house to tell them what happened and I was safe.

A lot has changed since I was a kid and in many communities it changed from the “it takes a village” mentality where everyone watches out for each other to every man for themselves. It doesn’t have to be that way. It really does take a village and when we lose that sense of community we are all losing.

I want to win. I want all of us to win. When one of us is struggling we’re all struggling. When one of us is succeeding we’re all succeeding.  We need each other. We need to be there for each other when we’re down just as much as we need to be there for each other when we are celebrating.

It takes a village. Find your village people.
